Fact-finding tour on dragon fruit growing and consumption in Bac Binh district

Mr. Nguyen Huu Thong- Deputy head of the National Assembly deputies’ delegation of Binh Thuan province on April 18 led a delegation to make a survey on the cultivation and consumption of dragon fruit in the Northern district of Bac Binh.

The delegation also included Mrs Pham Thi Hong Yen- standing member of the NA’s Economic Commision, along with deputies of National Assembly- Binh Thuan province and leaders of concerning agencies, localities. The survey was conducted by two groups to learn about the situation of dragon fruit production and consumption among local farmers and dragon fruit cooperatives in Bac Binh district. Especially, they focused on growing and caring dragon fruit trees, pestilent insects and the use of pesticide, the registration of VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards…

During the survey, many dragon fruit growing households shared about difficulties related to the fruit’s fluctuating prices while increasing prices of pesticide, resulting in high input costs. Therefore, most of dragon fruit growers hoped that the authorities would support them in consuming their products as well as prices of agricultural materials so that they felt secure to keep production. According to Mr. Nguyen Huu Thong, the survey aims to help farmers remove obstacles in production and consumption of dragon fruit; deal with precarious output to ensure sustainable development of dragon fruit; support dragon fruit growers actively update information to meet the requirements on the quality of exported dragon fruit. Mr. Thong also emphasized that farmers should focus on measures to improve the fruit’s quality and boost the export with official quota.

According to reports from The People’s Committee of Bac Binh district, the total dragon fruit cultivation area now is about 4,032 ha (a reduction of 595 ha compared with that of last year). Productivity in the first 3 months of 2022 reached 30,211 tons. There are 59 dragon fruit purchase facilities in Bac Binh district while there is only one dragon fruit processing facility -Phuc Ha Limited company (Hai Ninh commune), which specilizing in producing fermented dragon fruit juice.

As planned, the same surveys are expected to be conducted in Ham Thuan Bac and Ham Thuan Nam districts in the following weeks.
