BTO- On Sunday evening (July 25), local fishermen discovered a dead sea turtle drifting onshore in the area of Hoa Phu (Phan Ri Cua townlet-Tuy Phong district), 20 km far from Hon Cau Marine Protected Area.

The creature, which is about 125cm in length, 82cm in width, weighing over 20kilos, was found intact (without any wound). The rare animal was immediately taken to the coast and buried to prevent it from causing environmental pollution. According to the managing board of Hon Cau Marine Protected Area, this olive ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) may die from eating plastic marine debris or being stuck and suffocated in fishing net.

In the recent years, many kinds of sea turtles have come to the beach of Hon Cau MPA to hatch eggs. The unit’s staffs and volunteers have helped hundreds of sea turtles hatch and protect their nests. Reportedly, 5 species of sea tutles in Vietnam have been listed as endangered animals in IUCN’s Red Book, including hawskbill, green, olive ridley, caretta caretta and leatherback.
