BTO- The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan on October 7 issued the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) certification for dragon fruit grown in Binh Thuan.

This protected status is hoped to be a “passport” that paves the way for the trademark “Binh Thuan dragon fruit” to make inroads into the Japanese market and increases its value.  Japan has been considered as a demanding market, with strict requirements on exported product’s quality as well as food safety and hygiene. The certificate has affirmed the prestige of Binh Thuan’s dragon fruit, as it has been the second agricultural product of Vietnam to receive PGI certification in Japan, after Luc Ngan lychee .

Moreover, in Japan, dragon fruit, especially red-flesh dragon fruit, has been considered as one of valuable and rare fruit products. The protection status is expected to help dragon fruit gain more advantage for the consumption of dragon fruit in Japanese market.
