At the meeting, the UNESCO's World Heritage Committee highly valued the diversity of animal and plant species in the park. According to the World Nature Organization's assessment, the park has the greatest number of plants and animal species in Vietnam. The committee also approved the Vietnam's proposal to expand the park up to 123,000ha from over 85,000ha at the moment.
Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park was established in 2001 from the upgrading of Phong Nha Natural Preserving Zone and inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2003 at at the 27th session of the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO. The park’s landscape is formed by limestone plateaux and tropical forests. It features great geological diversity and offers spectacular phenomena, including a large number of caves and underground rivers.
