The step aims at helping Vietnam among top four leading nations in air traffic in ASEAN. Under the revised plan, Vietnam’s aircraft fleet will grow with the application of modern technology to increase the capacity of airports. Vietnam will upgrade its three transport centers to meet ASEAN standards.
According to the new plan, the aviation sector will exploit 28 airports (including 15 domestic and 13 international airports). The would-be Phan Thiet airport is one of 6 new domestic airports in the southern region. PM has agreed with the upgrading of Phan Thiet airport’s scale from 4C to 4E, with a 3,050 meter- runway. With an estimated cost of VND 1,000 trillion, the civilian-military Phan Thiet airport covers a land area of 543 ha and has a yearly capacity of 2 millions passengers.
According to Mr. Nguyen Tan Le- deputy Director of Department of Transport, functional bodies in Binh Thuan and Phan Thiet city People’s Committee have made efforts to complete compensation and site clearance to hand over the total land area to the builder. The localities have already finished investment procedures for the civilian component and signed a BTO (Build-Operate-Transfer) contract with Rang Dong JSC. The company is working with the advisory unit for the complete the designed mapping under the PM’s newly-issued decision in order to step up construction plan. Le hopes that Ministry of Defence would select an investor for a BT (Build-Transfer) contract for military component to boost the construction of both components.
Phan Thiet Airport is considered as one of significant projects in Binh Thuan province. It’s operation is expected to help attract more investment projects for socioeconomic development in general and tourism services in particular. The airport will turn Binh Thuan into a national centre of sea tourism and sports in the future, as well as ensure national defense and security.
