They were also informed about the province’s direction to minimize and eliminate the illegal fishing of local vessels and fishermen in foreign countries. Especially, fishermen were urged to strictly take measures to curb illegal fishing in order to meet EU’s demand on fighting illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Ship-owners and captains are asked to make commitments not to infringe on foreign waters.

In 2017, fishing boats and 38 crew members from La Gi town were seized for illegally fishing in Malaysia waters. The session aims to raise local fishermen’s awareness of national sovereignty over sea and islands, ensuring safety for their property and lives as well as their compliance  with EU’s conditions for the withdrawal of the yellow card given to Vietnamese marine exports due to IUU fishing.
