Though the new US Administration has made adjustments to its foreign policy, Viet Nam and the US can still deepen the comprehensive partnership for the common and long-term interests of the two countries.

According to The Washington Times’ article entitled “Viet Nam-US White House Agenda promotes bilateral cooperation”, PM Phuc’s visit will open up opportunities for the two sides to discuss on policies and enforcement of policies on economy, trade and regional and international issues of common concerns.

The visit also reflects one thing that Viet Nam and the US stand ready to further strengthen mutual understanding as well as cooperation in trade, education, defense-security and maritime areas. Both Viet Nam and the US acknowledge globalization has brought positive fruits to Viet Nam that can be vividly seen in foreign-invested factories in the Southeast Asian country. Foreign investment inflows to Viet Nam have contributed to reducing poverty rate and increasing living standard and life-span of Vietnamese people.

Former US diplomat David Brown said that during the Obama years, Washington and Ha Noi forged a strategic entente – unofficial, of course, but increasingly real, and Barack Obama’s visit to Viet Nam last May was therefore a triumph. Brown said the US and Viet Nam might agree to explore a bilateral trade pact that would entail many Trans-Pacific Partnership-like trade reforms.

Commenting on the visit, Dr. Jonathan D. London, a leading scholar of contemporary Viet Nam said a great deal has changed in Viet Nam and in its relations with the US, particularly in the two decades since the governments of the two countries normalized ties, and especially within the last several years.

The two countries have come to view each other as indispensable strategic partners, especially in trade and security matters. Therefore, the visit not only portends the development of US-Viet Nam bilateral relations and the future prospects of Viet Nam’s development, but the White House’s intentions with respect to East Asia./.
