BTO - Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc set a target of reaching 90% of the population covered by health insurance by 2020 during an online conference on June 3 to seek solutions to boost health insurance coverage nationwide.

He stressed the importance of health insurance coverage – a crucial axis in the system of social policies - in order to help all citizens, especially disadvantaged people, benefit from health care.

To realise the target, PM Phuc assigned specific tasks to ministries, sectors and localities. Accordingly, the Vietnam Social Insurance (VSI) was asked to expand the coverage, raise suggestions to the Government, the PM, ministries and sectors on the coverage expansion, and organise the outlet system to facilitate people’s participation in health insurance.

He allowed the VSI to use the remainder of its balance to support health insurance buyers this year and asked the agency to connect with the entire health care system to facilitate health insurance claims.

The leader also requested the Ministry of Health assign hospitals and high-quality health care facilities to improve their services, particularly for health insurance holders, boost administrative reforms, enhance examination over the implementation, and facilitate the press to communicate about related matters.

PM Phuc required provinces and cities to include the target of health insurance coverage in their annual socio-economic development goals and be responsible for their five-year implementation.
