BTO - On 20th January every year, Ke Ga fishermen in Ham Thuan Nam district going to Van Phong temple pray to the Whale Lord for good weather and smooth sailing. The whale, Nam Hai Dai Tuong Quan has been worshiped as  Binh Thuan residents’ culture for long time. Van Phong temple was built in 1899 under the Nguyen Dynasty. It is located on the small rocky hill at Ke Ga hamlet, Tan Thanh commune (Ham Thuan nam district), near Ke Ga lighthouse.

It is said that three fishermen (Lam Ho Tanh, Diep Minh Phong and Ho Phe) met French ship while catching fish in the sea. They were caught and cast down the sea. Unexpectedly, after waking up, they were lying on a rock near shore. With their drowsiness, the fishermen were brought ashore safely. Therefore, whales have been worshiped and considered as guardian angels. Not only fishermen but also visitors to the temple pray for peace and good crops…

In the early 2016, Van Phong temple was restored by Bien Da Vang Tourism Group and fishermen’s contribution.
