PPC’s chairman works with investors over project planting peppermint in Bac Binh

BTO-Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Ngoc Hai and leaders of functional departments on October 10 held a working session with Chau Giang Hung Yen Company Ltd and Japanese partner over the development orientation for the project of experimental planting peppermint trees in Bac Binh district.

During the past 3 years of implementing the pilot project of experimental planting peppermin trees in Bac Binh district (2016-2018), Chau Giang Hung Yen Company Ltd has taken researches in order to renovate production method towards industrialization in line with the local climate pattern, soil and cultivation practice of this crop. The official project  will be deployed on a 32-hectare land area in Bac Binh district. Accordingly, farmers in the project area can grow the peppermint trees themselves and sell the trees after harvesting, or produce peppermint oil then sell to the company. Chau Giang Hung Yen company will providing farmers with techniques in growing, caring, harvesting the trees and producing the oil.

According to the planning, the cultivation area of peppermint trees in period 2018-2019 is 32 hectares, 500 hectares in 2020, 300 hectares in 20230, 500 hectares in 2023 and 5,000 hectares in period 2024-2038.

Mr. Yoshiaki Wada, General Director of Japanese Suzuki Menthol Company Ltd said that the demand for using essential oil is rapidly increasing all around the world. Basing on the provincial People’s Committee’s commitment on expanding the material planting area, Chau Giang Hung Yen company and  Suzuki Menthol Company will partner with another Japanese Corporation-Sojitz to invest in building a peppermint essential oil factory in Binh Thuan province.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Hai emphasized that Binh Thuan’s authorities have considered peppermint tree as a potential crop for the local development because of its high economic value. He said that the province’s leaders would urged functional departments and agencies to outline a project to expand the growing area for this crop, as well as give support to enterprises investing in peppermint essential oil production factory, the first of its kind in Binh Thuan province.
