Binh Thuan braces for upholding its cutting-edge position in marine economic amid Covid-19 pandemic

BTO – The Covid-19 pandemic has so far raid over 200 countries all over the world, affecting heavily to a wide range of social life, especially the economic sector, including marine economy. Nevertheless, Binh Thuan will uphold its marine economic cutting-edge position by the province’s all-out efforts and great potentials.

Under the Resolution No. 36-NQ/TW dated October 22, 2018 of the 12th session of the Central Party Committee on Strategy for sustainable development of Vietnam’s Marine economy by 2020, with a vision toward 2045; Binh Thuan has determined to maintain fisheries economy as its strength to turn the locality into one of the major centers of fishing, logistic services, aquaculture, processing and aquaculture industries in the south central and southeastern coastal areas.

The coastal south-central province of Binh Thuan covers a natural area of 7,944 square meters with 10 district-level administrative units and island district of Phu Quy. Stretching along 192 km and over 52,000 territorial waters, Binh Thuan has an abundant fishing ground and resources. In which, marine economy plays an important role in the local economic activities. Such available advantages, the province has always put prioritized on developing aquaculture in harmony with effective seafood exploiting and processing. It is also necessary to ensure logistic services and monitor in-shore and off-shore fishing activities.

Every year, the provincial authorities always attach importance to building new fishing boats with high capacity for ease of off-shore fishing journeys. The preservation and protection for fisheries resources are also strictly taken into consideration.

Remarkably, the province has implemented several laws and punishments to cases of illegal fishing. Especially the European committee has issued a warning to Vietnam that the commission feels have not done enough to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. In the light of the EU’s warning, Binh Thuan has had many solutions to tackle the problem.

Promoting potential, maintaining strengths…

With an aims of promoting inherent strengths, Binh Thuan will keen on implementing restructuring its fisheries sector in the upcoming time. In addition, Fisheries Laws 2017 is also effectively disseminated and implemented to deal with IUU actions; improving the off-shore fishing with valuable products. In parallel with fishing activities, it should focus on protecting aquatic resources and national sovereignty, strictly handling with all violations.

consolidate and actively support solidarity groups in exploiting far-sea areas associated with logistic and processing services at sea; guide fishermen on fishing grounds in combination with protecting the sovereignty and security of the sea and islands. Strictly manage the fishing boats, strengthen protection of aquatic resources in combination with strictly handling violations.

Policy-favored to fishermen, extensive aquaculture model and hi-tech aquatic production areas are put forward by the province’s authorities.

As plan set by the Agriculture sector by 2020, fishing exploitation is expected to reach 215,000 tons , while aquaculture generates at 14,500 tons, seed shrimp production and consumption hits 24.5 billion post. Generally, marine export turnover is hoped to bring USD 155 million to the hometown. Those plans may be not fully achieved due to Covid-19 outbreak. However, Binh Thuan always affirms its position in marine economic position.

As long as all measures are comprehensively deployed, the province will successfully hold its position, becoming one of the largest center of fishing exploitation, logistic services, aquacultural industry of the South Central and Southeastern Regions of Vietnam in the upcoming time.
