Standing deputy Secretary of the provincial Party Committee Huynh Thanh Canh, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Hai-Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, Mr. Le Tuan Phong-vice chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, along with leaders of functional departments received and directly worked with the delegation.
In a report to the central business delegation, vice chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Le Tuan Phong stressed that, with a coastline stretching 192 kilometers, over the past years, Binh Thuan’s authorities have used many financial sources (including local budget and central assistance) to build sea dyke and embankment systems to prevent damages by high waves and sea erosion, ensuring safety for coast-dwellers’ lives and property. However, the current impact of climate change resulting in flood tide, storms and serious sea intrusion. Specifically, a coastline section in Tan Tien commune (La Gi town) has been heavily eroded by landslide and high waves.
Speaking at the meeting with the province’s leaders, Mr. Phan Xuan Dung emphasized that the fact-finding trip to Binh Thuan is part of a series of NA’s surveys on the situation of sea erosion in coastal localities in Vietnam.
Through field surveys and reports of the province’s authorities, the delegation has found the serious situation of landslide and sea erosion in a number of coastal areas in Binh Thuan have threatened people’s safety and their properties. It is urgent to cope with the problem. Mr. Dung suggested a number of resolutions that have been carried out in many provinces/cities to prevent sea erosion, including planting trees to protect the coast from waves action, building sea kykes and embankment … In addition to the state budget’s support, private sector has involved in the construction of seashore dyke and embankment systems. This is a new orientation that needs to be studied and extended. In the short term, Mr. Dung asked the local authorities to report to Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development the list of construction work that need to be given priority for investment in order to submit to the National Assembly.
Ahead of the meeting, the business delegation made surveys in some spots with sea encroachment in La Gi town, Phan Thiet city and Tuy Phong district.
