Binh Thuan’s fishermen equipped with scuba rescue techniques

BTO- Department of Health lately held a working session with Francophone Association for Mutual Aid and Promotion of The Life Sciences (AFEPS) to hold a training course on rescue techniques for scuba lifesaving and sea-related accidents for local fishermen.

According statistics since 2014 until now, there have been over 40 cases of dive accidents in Binh Thuan, resulting in 10 deaths (the majority of them from Phu Quy island district). Every year, Binh Thuan sees the increasing  number of divers suffering from accidents.  AFEPS (France) is a non-profit organization specializing in giving supports to Vietnamese diving fishermen to protect themselves. Since 1998, AFEPS has organized many training courses on rescue techniques, safety and skills in initial first aid for hundreds of fishermen in the provinces of Khanh Hoa, Quang Ngai and Ba Ria-Vung Tau.

At the meeting, representatives of department of Health also asked AFEPS to help Binh Thuan train medical officers, fishery authority, border guard solders and fishermen how to keep them safe and prevent from diving-related accidents, as well as maintain specialized knowledge on the treatment of diving accidents for medical facilities in the coastal areas (Phu Quy, Tuy Phong , Phan Thiet, La Gi, Ham Tan). In addition, trainees will receive diving equipment after the course, which is scheduled to take place in October.
