According to Gerard Soppe, a senior water and sanitation expert from the WB, the programme to improve the water supply in Can Tho is a part of the third project on urban upgrades launched by the WB in the city.

The programme aims to improve the city’s water supply in an affordable and sustainable manner.

According to the plan, in 2018, the World Bank will collect quantitative data on the operational mechanism of the Can Tho Water Supply and Sewerage Company and evaluate the results based on international standards to set up a plan for reform and innovation of the company's operation in the near future.

The main objective is to expand the water supply and distribution network to reach both newly urbanised and remote areas, assist local authorities in selecting short-term and medium-term water distribution plans, and upgrade the operations and increase the maintenance of the current water treatment system.
