BTO – A giant  ribbon fish (Trichiurus lepturus), was found alive by fishers and tourists on Mui Ne beach, near Malibu resort, on April 13th afternoon.

The fish, sized 3 meters long, 20 centimeters wide and weighed 10 kilograms, was still alive at the time it was washed ashore. Although the local fishers tried to take the poor fish to the sea, the fish could not recover and died haft an hour later. Such big ribbon fish is rare, so the fishermen called it “Hố Ông” (a way to respect the fish following the local custom). After the detection, the locals held burial for the carcass.

Reportedly, a nearly 3-meter-ribbon fish, weighed 7 kilograms, was also drifted ashore in Tien Hai hamlet, Tien Thanh commune, Phan Thiet city in April 2016.

According to the local fishermen’s belief, the oversized ribbon fish is venerated and called respect “Hố Ông” or “Ông Ngài”. This species often live in the water depth from 45-60 meters, belonging to a kind of fierce fish and often hunt for feed on the upper layer during the daytime.
