Phu Quy fishermen buried the dead whale with full honors

BTO – The fishermen in Phu Quy island district are preparing all procedures to bury the body of 10-ton-whale that was found at about 11:00 on April 4th by a fishing boat, sign No. BĐ 94725TS, led by captain Dang Mau Huu, 45, resident of Binh Dinh province. The whale, estimated at around 17-18 meters I height and nearly 10 tons in weight of, was found in undamaged state while being drifted on waters area near Phu Quy Island.

After detecting the dead whale, Huu notified 2 other boats nearby to towed the carcase ashore for funeral rituals under the fishermen’s custom.

This was the first time such big dead whale has been found on Phu Quy’s waters, according to the local fishermen.

As known, when the whale died, local fishermen have to carry out formal funeral rituals for the animal. Besides, finding a dead whale on the shore is regarded a harbinger of good luck at sea to the fishing village and fishermen both in fishing work and in daily life.
