Overview of the anniversary ceremony of 40 years of Thu Duc prison’s formation and development. |
Thu Duc re-education camp in Ho Chi Minh city was formed on April 4th 1976 from the takeover of Thu Duc re-education center under the Saigon puppet government. 13 months later, the unit was removed to Ham Tan district (Binh Thuan province) by the Ministry of Internal Affairs. It was merged with Ham Tan re-education camp in June 1988 into the Thu Duc inmate re-education and management camp (Z30D), which is now known as Thu Duc prison under the management of General Police Department of Criminal Judgement and Enforcement and Justice Assistance (the Ministry of Public Security). The prison performs the roles of detention and re-education of puppet army and offenders and crimes.
Thu Duc prison started with only 4 sub-camps with nearly 4,000 prisoners and the unit now has 8 sub-camps and 3 detention areas to ensure the management of nearly 8,000 prisoners. From 1996 up to now, the unit has proposed to reduce the execution term of imprisonment for nearly 62,000 turns of prisoners, released more than 41,000 prisoners and suggested amnesty for more than 7,000 well-rehabilitated inmates.
The unit has had the honors to be recognized as the title “hero of the People’s Armed Forces” for two times in 1995 and 2009. After the ceremony, soldiers and officers of Thu Duc prison performed eye-catching martial art and parade demonstrations.
