The so-called “Flying sand dunes” is originated from the constant changes in appearance and shape of sand dunes hourly, daily, and monthly due to the natural impacts, such as the wind. Such impact has gradually made the sand surface flat and pleated look like layers of waves.
The most interesting of Mui Ne flying sand dunes is the unique of sand color. This mixed color is a combination between yellow, ivory, gray white, light red, etc.
As long as the Sun rises high, the sand color becomes shinier. On contrary, the sand turns into dark red color when it rains.
The landscape is also known as “Mui Ne Sand Dunes” as it is associated with the administrative place where it is located. Otherwise, its other name “Doi Hong” came from the salient color of pink in combination of fine sand and iron mines. According to researchers, the red sand dunes in Binh Thuan are generally sedimentary sources of wind and sea that was formed during the "fourth" period and directly related to the fluctuations of sea level during tidal waves.
Up to now, there are 18 colors of completely natural sand found in Mui Ne. Therefore, it is regarded as a perfect "material warehouse" for sand sculptors and artisans to create many sand paintings with unique and beautiful sand colors.
Once experienced the feeling of climbing up to the sand hill and watching panoramic view from a distance, you can uphold the entire landscape of Mui Ne and its surrounding beach. In somewhere, the whisper of the wind in harmony with and the waves has created some pleasant sound that dispelled life's fatigue and stress.
Additionally, it is full of fun as you can play sand-boarding with planks to return your funny childhood memories with the children. Fortunately, if you go on the occasion of the 4th day of the Lunar New Year, you can also immerse yourself in the bustle of the people attending the sand running race.
In 2008, the Government approved the Master plan for the development of Mui Ne National Tourist Area in Binh Thuan Province until 2025, with a vision to 2030, including the planning of Sand Dunes to serve tourism development.
