Giant lotus lanterns light up for Buddha’s birthday

Seven giant lotus lanterns were lit up on Xuan Huong lake on May 3 to mark Buddha’s 2561th birthday as part of activities of the 2017 Buddhist Culture Week.

The giant lotus lanterns, the largest of its kind in Da Lat city, were made by artisans from Hue in several months. The lotus lanterns, made of hard materials, are 3.7metres high and 7.5 metres in diameter. Each of them weighs 500kilos and has 27 leaves.
 

The lanterns were positioned in the middle of Xuan Huong lake. Each is equipped with an independent electric generator.

According to the organising board, a vegetarian food festival will be held on May 4-6 during the event. The grand ceremony marking Buddha’s birthday will be held in Linh Son pagoda in the Central Highlands’ province of Lam Dong on May 10 by the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha Executive Council.
