Provincial leader tours districts to inspect storm response

BTO-After an urgent meeting of the provincial People’s Committee on the work in response to storm Damrey (the 12th typhoon so far in this year), Chairman Nguyen Ngoc Hai on November 2nd made a tour to the districts of  Bac Binh and Tuy Phong district to check and direct all preparation for the storm.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF), at 16 PM yesterday, the location of Damrey was approximately 13.1 degrees north latitude and 116.2 degrees east longitude, 750 km east from the  coast of Khanh Hoa-Ninh Thuan provinces. The strongest wind in the area near its centre was blowing at level 9 (75- 90 kph) with a gust of level 11.

It is forecast in the next 24 hours, the typhoon will continue to move in the east ward direction then divert to a southwest direction (20 kph on average) and get stronger. The NCHMF forecasts that today at 16 PM, Damrey will be at 12.7 degrees north latitude and 111.6 degrees east longitude, 230 kilometers east from the coast of provinces of Khanh Hoa and Ninh Thuan.  The strongest wind is projected to blow at level 10-11 (90-115 kph) with a gust of level 14.

In Binh Thuan, the forecast rainfall is about 100-150 mm, especially the mountainous areas could receive up to 250 mm. Floods, landslides and inundation are predicted to occur in the localities.

Right after attending the meeting on November 2, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Hai visited Vinh Tan thermal power plant in Tuy Phong district to urge the unit to quickly prepare for the storm prevention and control. He also directly checked the safety in the whole plant. Mr. Hai asked the management board of Vinh Tan thermal power plant to keep a close watch on the movements of the storm to take preventive measures to ensure safe for this national project, especially in the ash and cinder grounds. He directed the plant to close work with the contractors and armed forces in Tuy Phong district to ensure the security and actively prepare plansto cope with the storm’s landfall.

Mr. Hai asked Tuy Phong district’s authorities to urgently prepare forces and means to rescue, ensure the security for fishing boats; guide the fishermen and locals to strengthen their homes, take the boats to storm-resistant shelters to mitigate material losses; set the plans to evacue residents from the vulnerable areas, particularly for foreign workers at Vinh Tan thermal power plant..

In Bac Binh district, Chairman Nguyen Ngoc Hai asked local government and people not to be subjective in preparing for storm Damrey. The district must pay attention to implement rescue plans in response to the storm under the form of “bon tai cho” (four in-site). He urged the traffic police force to take responsibility for regulating traffic route to prevent traffic congestion on National Highway 1A before and after the storm hitting the mainland. Bac Binh district’s authorities were asked to concentrate on propagandizing and helping local residents to evacuate from dangerous areas with high risk of flood and landslides.
