BTO – In a recent workshop to discuss about solutions to enhancing trash and waste treatment and collection along the coastal areas of Phan Thiet city, nearly 100 delegates from the local departments/agencies/bodies have participated and contributed feasible solutions. The event was held by Binh Thuan provincial Union of Sciences and Technology Associations.

Through real surveys, the authorities of Phan Thiet city found that there are a huge amount of trash dumped by visitors and citizens everyday, with around 325 tons per day. In which, solid trash is estimated about 20-23 tons a day while 200-300 tons of trash are mollusks shells, especially in season of seafood processing. Many of those are persistent and difficultly-decomposed, floating at sea for several days and causing serious environmental pollution.

According to statistics, about 25-30 tons of garbage washed ashore and piled up on the beach of Hon Rom and Ham Tien everyday. However, just about 300 tons of trash are collected a day and night in Phan Thiet city, accounting for 80 percent against the total dumped waste. The stagnant waste in some areas, therefore, has caused bad effects on people’s lives and tarnish the image of Binh Thuan tourism.

At the workshop, a number of suggestions to sea environment management were presented, saying that it should put forward some sanctions, punishments on trash-related violation, socialization of garbage collection to reduce burden on state budget and create a general consensus in the process of environmental protection. On the other hand, the People’s Committee of Phan Thiet city had petitioned the provincial People’s Committee to invest systems of wastewater collection and treatment in some coastal areas of key tourist attractions of Ham Tien, Mui Ne and Tien Thanh.
