Mother sea turtle and 108 eggs rescued at Hon Cau MPA

BTO- The rescue team of Hon Cau Marine Protected Area (MPA) in Tuy Phong district successfully rescued a female sea turtle laying eggs in early morning of Saturday (June 10).

One day earlier, this sea turtle, which is 1.1 meter in length and nearly 90 kilos in weight,  was seen crawling to the beach of Hon cau MPA to find laying ground. The patrol team regularly monitored throughout the night from 8 PM to 3 AM of the next day waiting for her to lay eggs. Eventually, a 108- egg nest was safely moved to the hatching area.

According to the plan for conservation of sea turtle 2017, the managning board of Hon Cau MPA has coordinated with organizations regarding to protecting marine turtles such as: Global Environment Fund (GEF), the GEF Small Grant Programme (GEF SGP), and Vietnam-International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN Vietnam), to hold the campaign “Protecting sea turtles in favour of community-based ecotourism development at Hon Cau MPA”.

In the recent years, dozens of sea turtles laying eggs have been detected and protected in Hon cau MPA, particularly 10 sea turtles in 2013, 3 ones in 2014, 10 ones in 2015, and 13 ones in 2016. From May, 2017 until now, Hon Cau MPA and related units have detected 3 sea turtle nests. They successfully moved one nest to the hatching ground and left 2 others in natural environment for hatch.
