He made the call during a walk aiming to raise the percentage of children wearing helmets when riding motorcycles and similar vehicles jointly held in HCM City on September 27 by the National Traffic Safety Committee and the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET).

Also Chairman of the National Traffic Safety Committee, Deputy PM Binh affirmed that providing care and education for children and young people are a duty of all people. Making sure that children properly wear helmets demonstrates commitment to protecting lives and health care for the country’s future generations and preventing losses triggered by traffic accidents.

He underlined that efforts have been made over the years to raise the rate. Of note, a programme arranged by the traffic safety committee and the MoET on presenting helmets for first graders has helped raised the figure to about 70 percent, which is expected to stand at 80 percent by the end of this year.

Chairman of the HCM City People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong said that the city will bolster communications on wearing helmets when riding motorbikes and dissemination of traffic regulations in schools.

According to the National Traffic Safety Committee, the death toll from traffic accidents declined to over 8,200 in 2018 from nearly 12,000 recorded six years earlier.
