BTO – Binh Thuan will keep on fighting with IUU fishing on overseas waters, heard a conference held by the Steering Committee on Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing Prevention and Control in Binh Thuan province on July 15th. Chaired by Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s committee Le Tuan Phong, the event aimed to promote propaganda, control and management of the fishing activities of local fishing vessels on the waters.

To strictly control the offshore fishing boats to meet the EC’s standards, Vice chairman Phong urged the relevant departments/bodies to push forward measures to terminating IUU fishing on foreign waters’ territories. In which, the activities of fishing vessels’ input and output should be closely managed and scrutiny. In cases of violations, they must be fined immediately to deter the others.

On October 23, 2017, the EC issued a "yellow card" warning to Vietnam, after the country failed to demonstrate sufficient progress in the fight against fishing worldwide. Though the measure was considered a warning, which would not technically affect the EC trade policy, the Vietnamese fishing industry was concerned that the yellow card would seriously harm the reputation of Vietnamese seafood worldwide, thus weakening sales.

According to EC’s requirement, the Vietnamese seafood sector had to implement nine recommendations in six months from October 23, 2017, to April 23, 2018. The nine recommendations included revision of the legal framework to ensure compliance with international and regional rules applicable to the conservation and management of fisheries resources, ensuring the effective implementation and enforcement of the country’s revised laws, and strengthening the effective implementation of international rules and management measures.
