ROK supports Vietnam in recovery from typhoon consequences

A partnership to this effect was signed by representatives of the Vietnam Disaster Management Authority, the ROK Embassy in Vietnam and the UNDP at a ceremony in Hanoi, on December 12, through which the affected families will be provided with the necessary knowledge and resources to repair and rebuild their houses, aiming to ensure that the buildings can withstand future typhoons and floods.

Addressing the signing, Kamal Malhotra, UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam, emphasised that facilitating the people’s access to safe houses is the core factor in the recovery work, towards ensuring the safety of life for the people and helping them to get their lives back to normal.

For his part, Tran Quang Hoai, Permanent Member of Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and Director General of the Vietnam Disaster Management Authority, highly appreciated the ROK Government’s support through the UNDP, which he said will help the typhoon-hit families to have safer houses after Typhoon Damrey, the 12^th storm to hit Vietnam this year.

Speaking at the ceremony, ROK Ambassador to Vietnam, Lee Hyuk, stated that the ROK and Vietnam have built one of the most successful partnerships over the past 25 years, adding that going beyond economic cooperation, friendly bonds and solidarity, the two countries also support each other in their moments of difficulty and work together to address the current challenges.

He voiced his hopes that the support, launched in cooperation with the UNDP, would contribute to helping to repair and restore the damaged houses in typhoon-affected areas and enhancing their resilience against future disasters.

The ROK will continue to stand side by side with Vietnam to deal with the challenges posed by climate change, Lee Hyuk affirmed.

Typhoon Damrey struck Vietnam on November 4, affecting more than 4.3 million people, destroying 3,500 houses and damaging over 300,000 others.

The ROK’s support project will be implemented in close collaboration between the local authorities, the Vietnam Red Cross Society and the Vietnam Women’s Union, focusing on poor and near-poor families and the people in need of urgent assistance.
